Electric operation is the most effective and safest method of operating blinds and curtains avoiding the need for loops and cords that can cause harm. With a wide range of remote control options as standard, multiple window treatments can be programmed to operate together in groups and/or individually and provide flexibility for users to control their shading and privacy however they wish.

Blind motors are concealed out of sight within or behind the blind system and do not affect the appearance and interior design in any way. The consistent operation of an electric motor ensures the longevity of the blind mechanism, rather than a manual system which can be mishandled over time to negative affect.
There are several electrical control solutions to consider.

Standalone motorised blinds

Stand-alone systems are most common for controlling blinds on small to medium projects. Where blinds are being fitted retrospectively or in a particular area of the house – a garden room for example – a stand-alone control system would be installed to operate the blinds.

The blinds require their own power source, motors, transformers (if low voltage) and controls (handset or wall mounted switch). Motorised blinds are activated either via a hard wire connection from the control point to each motor or by using ‘wireless’ or RTS (radio transmitted signal) to a radio receiver connected to the blinds.

Stand-alone systems tend to use the RTS method whereas home automation systems often have a hard-wired connection.

Fully Integrated Home Control System

Integrated building management systems (BMS) are ideally suited to larger projects or when window treatments are being installed alongside other work being carried out on the property. Integrating the blinds to the home control system blinds can be operated together with audio-visual, lighting, security, etc. This allows the blinds and other window treatments to be part of the BMS mood and scene settings.

Common BMS integrations include Lutron, Control 4 and Crestron, however, blinds can usually be operated with any third-party system with the final specification will depend on what is available and required. More complex installations will need additional component to enable the blinds controller and the home automation system to ‘talk’ to each other. Operation via the stand-alone remote control is possible too.
